When Perception Meets Reality

22. May 2013 02:02

Recently, our sales team received a request for matching materials to a unique guarding application from a member of our dealer network specializing in data management solutions.  The existing material was installed in a major worldwide auto manufacturer's facility in the Southeastern United States.  The request contained a parts list of components along with a photograph of the installed application for reference.

At first glance, the application is a partition wall, constructed of wire mesh panels attached to a steel post.  Upon closer inspection, the “panels” are unframed welded wire webs, similar in design to wire pallet rack decking.  The unframed wire webs are attached to the steel post with metal clips and self-tapping screws.  It appears the partition wall sustained damage and is being supported by the use of a zip-tie fastener.  If asked to caption this photo, what words would you use?

Let’s compare this to a similar photograph of SpaceGuard’s SG2000 versatile mesh enclosures.  Again at first glance, the construction is wire mesh panels attached to a steel post.  The difference, though, is in the details.  Panels are constructed of fully welded, steel angle framing around the wire mesh, expanded metal, or sheet metal filler. Panel frames are punched and steel posts are pre-drilled to accept the 5/16” through-bolts used for all connections.  Asked the same question, would you use the same words to describe SG2000

In today’s marketplace, technology plays a key role in purchasing decisions.  The result:  Perception is reality.  Are you really getting the safety or security solution you intended to purchase?  Our team of industry-leading customer service department is ready to help determine the best solution to meet your needs and your budget.    Call 800-841-0680, or email at sales@spaceguardproducts.com.

NMFC Classification Changes Affecting Freight Rates

24. April 2013 05:50

At SpaceGuard, we are committed to the highest standard in both quality and service. Freight estimates and shipping coordination is just a couple of the services we provide for our distributors.

On April 20th, changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) Guide were put into effect. The ruling changed the classification and naming of our products therefore impacting their freight rate determination in Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) shipments.

Prior to the ruling, all LTL shipment were classified under Item 36890 and shipped under Class 77.5. Under the new guidelines, Item 36890 has been cancelled and reclassified under Item 68025 which uses a density scale to determine freight class. Per this scale, all LTL shipments are now shipped under Class 200.

In anticipation of the changes, SpaceGuard renegotiated and modified our rate agreements with our LTL carriers to ensure these changes would have little to no effect on the competitive rates we offer. We will continue to provide freight estimates, prepay and add, for all quotations. For those shipping collect or third party, all bill of ladings will include packaging dimensions and weights to help calculate densities. Please be advised that re-classifications and load inspections are to be expected during this transition period. Contact your agent to discuss and modify your rate agreement to help minimize the impact.

Robotic Guarding: OSHA Standards - Part 3 of 3

13. March 2013 03:33

As a continuation on our previous posts regarding the OSHA standard detailing methods of creating effective safety systems for robotics operations (Instruction PUB 8-1.3 SEP 21, 1987), the final method is less intrusive and designed for applications designated with a low hazard rating.

Awareness Barrier Device:  This is a device such as a low railing or suspended chain that defines a safety perimeter and is intended to prevent inadvertent entry into the work envelope but can be climbed over, crawled under, or stepped around. Such a device is acceptable only in situations where a hazard analysis indicates that the hazard is minimal and inter locked or fixed barrier guards are not feasible. Interlocked or fixed barrier guards provide a positive protection needed to prevent worker exposure to robotic systems hazards.

SpaceGuard offers two products that are geared for creating awareness barriers:  AisleGuard physical barriers and RailGuard mezzanine handrail safety systems.

AisleGuard physical barriers are a heavy-duty machine guarding product constructed of 4” x 8” x 4” formed 7-gauge channel with through bolt connections to 4” square tube posts for the ultimate protection.  AisleGuard is offered in single tier system (21” height) and double tier system (43”) applications. With a standard, durable zinc yellow polyester powder coat finish, AisleGuard is easily distinguishable from the nearby equipment.

RailGuard mezzanine handrail safety systems’ primary application is as an easy installed alternative to traditional mezzanine hand railing, but can also function as an awareness or pedestrian barrier.  Panels, constructed with SpaceGuard’s 10-gauge triple crimped woven wire securely welded in a fully welded, angle frame.  Posts, constructed from 2” X 2”, 14-gauge steel tube with welded base plates for anchoring.  RailGuard safety systems meet OSHA requirements of 200 lbs load applied at any point / direction.

Safety, at any level, is an important part of the industrial workplace and SpaceGuard is committed to providing an array of quality safeguarding products designed to meet these varying needs.  For help on these, and all our safety and secure storage products, our insides sales team is ready to assist, call 800-841-0680.

Robotic Guarding: OSHA Standards - Part 2 of 3

11. March 2013 03:52

As a continuation on our previous post regarding the OSHA standard detailing methods of creating effective safety systems for robotics operations (Instruction PUB 8-1.3 SEP 21, 1987), the next method integrates a fail-safe accessory to the fixed barrier guarding.

Interlocked Barrier Guard:  Like the fixed barrier guard, this is a physical barrier around a robot work envelope incorporating gates equipped with interlocks. These interlocks are designed so that all automatic operations of the robot and associated machinery will stop when any gate is opened. Restarting the operation requires closing the gate and reactivating a control switch located outside of the barrier. A typical practical barrier is an interlocked fence designed so that access through, over, under, or around the fence is not possible when the gate is closed.

SpaceGuard offers universal tongue operated interlocking safety switches are available for gates used to create an interlocked barrier guard for a robotics enclosure. Strong and versatile, the interlocks are equipped with 2 N/C positive, vibration resistant break safety contacts. It is important to note that a safety interlock switch cannot be used as a security device as it contains no features for this application.  A traditional locking device (padlock hasp, mortise cylinder lock, electronic access device) will need to be integrated into the application to provide a secure enclosure.

Implementing the proper safeguards helps to create a safe work environment and protect against costly fines and loss time accidents.  SpaceGuard is committed to provide quality safeguarding products to meet these needs.  For more information, our inside sales team is ready to help, call 800-841-0680.

Robotic Guarding: OSHA Standards - Part 1 of 3

28. February 2013 03:42
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Instruction PUB 8-1.3 SEP 21, 1987 details methods how an effective safety system protects operators, engineers, programmers, maintenance personnel, and others who could be exposed to hazards associated with a robot's operation. SpaceGuard’s innovative safeguarding products are geared to meet requirements of robotic guarding applications.

Fixed Barrier Guard:  A fixed barrier guard is a physical barrier around a robot work envelope that requires tools for removal, preventing access through, over, under, or around the fence. It provides sufficient clearance for a worker between the guard and any robot reach, including parts held by an end-effector, to perform a specific task under controlled conditions.

SpaceGuard’s SG2000 versatile mesh enclosures are designed with options to provide varying levels of safety & security based upon the needs of the project.  SG2000 offers multiple infill options, such woven & welded wire mesh, expanded & solid sheet metal and lexan, all allowing for full visibility within a safe environment.  Unlike conventional vertical based wire partition systems, SG2000 panels run horizontally connected through steel posts making them more efficient for projects requiring long runs, extended heights and variable sweep spaces.  SG2000 versatile mesh enclosures come standard with a durable, high quality gray polyester powder coat finish with five (5) additional standard colors, thermoplastic powder coat and hot dipped galvanized finish.

Protecting property and personnel is a top priority for industry and SpaceGuard is committed to providing industry-leading, innovative safeguarding products to meet the needs of the marketplace.  For more information, our inside sales staff is ready to assist, call 800-841-0680.

Making The Right Choice For Your Tool Crib

8. February 2013 03:34

SpaceGuard manufactures secure storage & safe-guarding products to a vast array of industries and applications, including tool cribs & parts counters.  For both applications, service windows and/or dutch doors are used to help distribute items.  When choosing options for a tool crib / parts counter, consider the following questions to determine the best solution:

       1. What is being distributed from / received into the enclosure?

       2. How frequent is the personnel traffic into the enclosure?

Standard slide-up service windows measure 24” wide by 21” high with a full width,  12” deep centered shelf.  Due to the their size, service windows are the perfect solution for items such as hand tools and other items which are able to be transferred through the window without major difficulty.

Standard dutch doors (double hung door) measure 36” wide (nominal) by 84” tall with a full width, 12” deep centered shelf.  Though classified as a “door”, the intended application description is a horizontal hinged service counter.  Dutch doors, due to their size compared to service windows, are better suited for distribution of large items and those requiring transport via handcart.  In high traffic areas, dutch doors should not be used as the sole personnel entrance as their configuration is not efficient in this capacity.

Secure Storage For Government Transportation Facility

16. January 2013 07:11

Features / Benefits Provided

  • Secure storage of equipment while allowing visibility within the enclosure
  • Solid construction and quick installation due to simple design
  • Thermoplastic powder coated gray for durable finish

The Opportunity

The Indiana Department of Transportation required secure storage for its Brookville Road Subdistrict Office on the southeast side of Indianapolis, IN.  The area to be secured was a covered, open-air truck bay located near the facility’s road salt distribution building.

The Solution

Facilities Field Administrator Chris Wren turned to SpaceGuard to supply the material for this project as INDOT has relied on SpaceGuard previously to provide secure storage for other area facilities.  SpaceGuard partnered with Brian Doub of Stac Material Handling, a material handling & industrial equipment distributor, to meet with Chris at the Brookville facility to determine the best product for this application.  Brian, along with SpaceGuard inside sales lead Matt Sipe, recommended SG2000 versatile mesh enclosures constructed with 10-gauge woven wire welded into a full steel frame.  The wire mesh, along with the clean, durable gray finish allows for easy visibility into the secured area.  With SG2000’s fully framed panels & doors installed through 2” X 2”, 14-gauge steel posts, installation was efficient.  Full height posts were anchored directly to the concrete, extending to the underside of the steel covering structure providing complete security of the area.  Due to the open-air location, the enclosure was finished using a thermoplastic powder coat that is designed to protect the material against the various elements as well from abrasions from the salt located at the facility.  Once installed, Chris Wren voiced his satisfaction, “I am very pleased with the product and the service provided on this project.  Another job well done.”
